The Southern Tour

Our southern tour tour takes you to places such as Memana, Walkers Lookout, Trousers Point, Lady Barron, Vinegar Hill and Cameron Inlet . Ask your tour guide about the places you can visit and these that are listed here.

Whitemark The main town and principal port of Flinders Island was possibly named after a white-washed stump or rock was used as a survey marker by Captain Stanley in 1877.
Memana The undulating plains of the east coast provide for sheep and cattle farming as well as a number of picturesque lagoons habited by a profusion of wildlife. Long isolated beaches with the only tracks being yours provide the sought after nautilus shells particularly after strong easterly weather.
Trousers Point Adorned with graceful sheoaks, Trousers Point offers an escape from the normal. A sheltered picnic area adjacent to the white sands of a sheltered beach with Mt Strzelecki providing a grand backdrop. Crystal clear waters add to the picture for one of the most photographed places on the island. Trousers Point
Mt Strzelecki Rising 756 metres above sea level, the granite peaks invite climbers to take the track to the summit. On a clear day the stunning views offers the visitor vistas over much of the island, to Lady Barron, Franklin Sound and to the Tasmanian mainland. The mountain is named after the Polish explorer and scientist, Paul Edmund Strzelecki who climbed the peak in 1842.
Lady Barron The major settlement on the southern part of the island, Lady Barron is home for the islands fishing fleet and charter operators. A comfortable tavern provides bar and restaurant service as well as good accommodation. An all weather gravel airstrip makes Lady Barron a popular alternative landing site after the main airfield at Whitemark.
Vinegar Hill

Just a short drive from Lady Barron, the lookout at Vinegar Hill provides a superb vista over Franklin Sound and the Vansitaart Shoals. The vehicle track is a little rough but worth the trip.

The wreck of the Farsund is clearly visible and on a day when the seas are up the breakers on the shoals a truly spectacular.

Pot Boil and Franklin Sound

The infamous Pot Boil is not for the faint hearted sailor on a rough day. Breaking seas on a rough windy day cause the waves to rise and break across a wide expanse of sandy shallows.

Franklin Sound provides the main shipping route to Lady Barron for the Furneaux Explorer that carries general cargo and some passengers from Bridport.

Scattered liberally with islands, these interesting waters also have plenty of history to explore and just south-west of its western end is the small Preservation Island where the first commercial Australian shipwreck occurred on 7 February 1797. The Sydney Cove was leaking badly so her master chose a sheltered bay at Preservation Island allowing all aboard to safely go ashore taking provisions including rum that was stored on the small nearby islet now called Rum Island.
